A Kind-Hearted Man

Elias Barfield Ford in Marion, South Carolina on September 18, 1809.  Elias was a kind-hearted man who once owned slaves. He owned a slave named Johnson Pete Ford. When Johnson Pete was freed, he purchased Elias Barfield Ford's home where he also lived. The house was at 415 Bascus Street, Lake View, South Carolina. Johnson Pete married Amy Page and they raised fourteen children in the house. It appears that Johnson Pete had a special relationship with Elias because he acquired most of the land. It has also been suggested that Johnson Pete may have been more than a slave to Elias. It's possible that Johnson Pete and Elias were half brothers. Johnson Pete may have been a child that Jesse Ford, Elias Ford's father, had with a slave woman. This has not been substantiated. Elias Barfield Ford died on June 23, 1884, at 74. He is buried at the Ford Cemetery in Lake View, South Carolina.
